How to create a custom portfolio

In addition to our managed portfolios, if you are comfortable making your own investment decisions, Guideline offers the ability to customize your portfolio. However, this option is not recommended unless you are an experienced investor or are working with a personal financial advisor. (1)

To customize, click the Portfolio page on your Guideline dashboard. You can then select the “Change Portfolio” button “Build a Custom Portfolio" option. Here you will see Guideline’s full investment menu, categorized by type (e.g. real estate, government bonds, equity, etc.). If you click on any fund name, you can see even more information regarding performance along with a link to the fund’s Google Finance page. (2)

You can designate a certain percentage allocation for any given fund and once you have set percentages, simply click the “This portfolio suits my objectives” button at the bottom of the page.

Please note that you can reallocate your portfolio at any time. Additionally, if you would rather receive a Guideline recommended portfolio, you are able to answer the series of suitability questions at any point as well.

(1) It’s key to diversify within your portfolio to have a mix of both growth (e.g. stock) and defensive (e.g. bond) assets to suit both your time until retirement and risk tolerance.

(2) Past performance is not a guarantee of future return, nor is it necessarily indicative of future performance. All investments involve risk, including the potential for loss of principal. Performance is shown net of fees and reflects the reinvestment of interest and dividends.
